Mold Removal: Prevention and Techniques

Molds appear in places where water and moisture content is high. Mold stains are quite hard to remove, so the earlier it is cleaned out and removed, the better, because leaving it on a surface for quite sometime only allows the molds to grow in size and the stain to seep deeper. The stale smell that mold gives out is also quite annoying. On the first sign of mold presence, take steps to conduct mold removal right away.

It is important to also keep in mind that molds could cause sickness and respiratory allergies. Hence, removing them as soon as possible minimizes the hazards to your family's health. Mold removal is quite a strenuous cleaning activity since it would require extra effort to brush the mold stains off and to dry the said surface thoroughly.

For mold removal procedure, the following are suggested:

  • Before tackling the task of mold removal from your home, it is essential that proper working clothes are donned. Wear gloves, a face mask, work shirts that have long sleeves and long pants. Wear goggles too to prevent the airborne spores from getting into your eyes.
  • Gather all needed cleaning equipment for mold removal like brushes, rags, pail of water (with water, detergent and any disinfecting/bleaching agent). You may also need another pail that contains clean water for rinsing.
  • Brush the surface thoroughly with the soapy water mixed with bleaching agent. Rinse out thoroughly with water, then wipe dry with rags.
  • Air dry the surface or furniture with a fan or better yet, if the area you just have cleaned is movable then carry it out and dry it under the sun.
  • After having cleaned out visible molds, do a second check within the perimeter or are where you have seen the molds. Others could just be out of sight, so just check to be sure that mold removal is conducted in all areas where necessary.
  • To avoid molds, fix leaking pipes or faucets. Seal cracks on walls and ceiling to prevent moisture from seeping in.
  • If the weather is fine, open windows to let in fresh air and naturally dry out any moisture that has accumulated in the house or room during the time that windows are locked.
  • If the house or room has an air ventilation system built on the ceiling, it would be a good idea to add one more to increase the airflow if windows and doors are not or cannot be opened.
  • Should a household furniture or fixture like a sofa, desk, cabinet, and rugs get wet, make sure to clean and dry them immediately.
  • When cleaning the house make sure to dry surfaces with clean rags to avoid moisture accumulation.
  • Wash shower curtains regularly, including foot rugs that may be in the comfort rooms or shower rooms. Likewise, dry the tiles in the bathrooms after use as much as possible to avoid the growth of molds.
  • If the surface is painted and has molds on it, scrape the molds off and clean the surface before repainting it. If the surface is wall papered, then remove the portion invaded by the molds and clean it thoroughly. Dry the surface well by using an air fan before replacing the wall paper.
  • Seal cracks on the floors, walls and ceilings; this is usually where the moisture enters that initiates the growth of molds.
